Wozzeck is my portrait interpretation of the central character of the play "Woyzeck".

Woyzeck is a harrowing stage play written by Georg Büchner in 1836-7 and has become one of the most performed and influential plays in the German theatre repertory.

Franz Woyzeck (Wozzeck), a lowly soldier stationed in a provincial German town, is living with Marie (his common-law wife), and child. Woyzeck earns extra money for his family by performing menial jobs for the Captain and agreeing to take part in medical experiments conducted by the Doctor. It becomes obvious that Woyzeck's mental health is steadily deteriorating, he becomes increasingly paranoid and suffers hallucinations. Eventually, becoming convinced of Marie's infidelity he stabs her to death by a pond. The play ends with Woyzeck drowning whilst disposing of the knife in the pond and trying to cleanse himself of blood.

Considered the first ever working-class tragedy, Woyzeck is a comment on social conditions as well as an exploration of complex themes such as poverty and status. Woyzeck is considered as "morally lacking" by characters of higher status such as the Captain, who links wealth and status with morality, thus suggesting that Woyzeck cannot have morals because he is poor. It is the exploitation of the character Woyzeck by the Doctor and the Captain which ultimately and inexorably pushes him over the edge.

The play has been adapted for Opera by Alban Berg and Manfred Gurlitt, and Film by Werner Herzog, Dariush Mehrjui and Rudolf Noelte.

I have had a love of art since an early age. I gained a Diploma in Art and Design, and later spent 3 years at Lincoln University (Hull School of Art). I have interests in portrait and figure painting, but have worked with most media, including oil, pastel, charcoal, 3d modelling, printing, acrylic, inks and photography.

Amongst many, many others, I admire the works of Munch, Modigliani, Goya, Lovis Corinth, Gary Hume, Paula Rego, Rembrandt, Lucean Freud, Picasso, Brecht, and the German Expressionists.

I have recently become unable to continue painting in oils and canvas etc., so I decided to learn how to paint digitally. I couldn't contemplate giving up painting altogether and digital painting has proven to be the solution for me as I needed some vehicle to allow me to express my love of art and ideas etc. It has also provided me with a motivation to overcome the challenges that are facing me.

I currently use a Huion GT220 graphics pen monitor, and the software I use is Corel Painter 2017, ArtRage, Paintstorm Studio, and Rebelle. With the occasional use of photoshop.
